Furadonin method of administration. Furadonin - instructions for use. With impaired renal function

Furadonin is a bacteriostatic or bactericidal agent, depending on its concentration and the susceptibility of the infected organism.

Furadonin for cystitis can be used as an alternative to trimethoprim / sulfamethoxazole, but is less effective in the treatment of vaginal bacterial infections. May also be used by women as a prophylaxis against recurrent cystitis associated with coitus.

The advantage of Furadonin is its high stability to the development of bacterial resistance. He has good feedback due to the low price and the possibility of using it for the treatment of young children (from one year old and older).

Furadonin is used for the following medical problems:

  1. Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections(IMP). Most often, this type of UTI is observed in young and middle-aged women and is successfully treated "in the background", that is, without changing the normal rhythm of life. Furadonin is effective for UTIs such as cystitis, pyelonephritis, pyelitis, and urethritis.
  2. Treatment of recurrent infection Bladder ... Recurrent infections (usually after treatment failure) occur in about 10% of women and rarely occur in men. Relapse is not considered a UTI and prior illness, but the duration of antibiotic therapy is increased to two weeks (minimum).
  3. As a means of prevention with cystoscopy, urological surgical procedures, catheterization.

The drug is available in the form of tablets of 50 mg and 100 mg. The active ingredient of the medicine is nitrofurantoin(Nitrofurantoin).

In addition to it, one tablet contains:

  • 46.15 mg of potato starch;
  • 2 mg of colloidal silicon dioxide;
  • 1 mg stearic acid;
  • 0.85 mg polysorbate-80.

Furadonin is active against some gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, such as:

  • Staphylococcus aureus (Staphylococcus spp).
  • Streptococcus (Streptococcus spp).
  • E. coli (Escherichia coli).
  • Enterobacter spp.
  • Shigella spp.
  • Klebsiella spp.

Weakly active against enterococci (Enterococcus spp) and fungal microorganisms of the genus Candida.

The bioavailability (ability to be absorbed) of furadonin in cystitis is 50%. The drug crosses the blood-brain and placental barriers and is excreted in breast milk, which is why it is not a preferred choice for breastfeeding and pregnancy.

  1. In the acute form of cystitis treatment continues from a week to 10 days. The recommended dosage for people 18 years of age and older is 50 mg every 6 hours, for a week or three days after urinalysis, which showed the presence of bacterial cultures.
  2. In the chronic form of cystitis take 50-100 mg at a time, it is possible before bedtime. The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor, it can be from 3 months or more.
  3. For preventive purposes take 100 mg of Furadonin at bedtime.

The unpleasant sensations that occur in the stomach and intestines when taking Furadonin can be reduced by taking it with food or milk.

note

Patients should only use Furadonin to treat bacterial infections. It is a narrow spectrum drug and is not effective against viral infection(for example, colds).

When treating with Furadonin for cystitis, it should be borne in mind:

  • Antacids containing magnesium trisilicate, when administered concurrently with nitrofurantoin, reduce both the rate and extent of absorption of the latter.
  • Excretion aids uric acid such as probenecid and sulfinpyrazone can inhibit the secretion of nitrofurantoin. As a result, the toxicity of the drug may increase, and its antibacterial effectiveness may decrease.
  • The acidic environment enhances the action of Furadonin, so it is better to take it together with protein products.
  • The active ingredient of Furadonin (nitrofurantoin) is incompatible with fluoroquinolones.
  • This medication may interfere with some urine glucose tests.

Instructions for use prescribe Furadonin to be stored at room temperature in a place out of the reach of children.

It's important to know

Vomiting is a sign of Furadonin overdose. To treat the symptoms of an overdose, dialysis is used, the use of large amounts of fluids. This helps to increase the excretion (excretion from the body) of the drug.

Reviews about this drug in the treatment of cystitis, mostly positive. However, the authors of the reviews note the poor effectiveness of Furadonin in the treatment of pyelonephritis and unpleasant side effects. Many reviews advise using more modern, albeit more expensive, drugs to treat bladder infections.

One of the main advantages indicated in the reviews is the price of Furadonin. It ranges from 92 to 130 rubles for a pack of 20 tablets of 50 mg each.

How to take Furadonin for cystitis in men, women and children

A man or woman takes the drug Furadonin, 1 tablet containing 50 or 100 mg of nitrofurantoin (the dosage is recommended by the doctor) 3-4 times a day, during meals, with plenty of water.

During pregnancy, the drug, although it can be used (from 13 weeks), carries the risk of fetal intoxication, therefore, before taking Furadonin for cystitis, consultation with a doctor is required. The dosage is 0.1-0.15 g three or four times a day.

The duration of treatment with Furadonin during the period of gestation is determined by the doctor.

note

If Furadonin must be used during lactation, the child is not breastfed during treatment. The active substance of the drug passes into breast milk.

The dosage of Furadonin is determined by the doctor, usually it does not differ from the standard recommendations for adults:

  • If Furadonin was prescribed to a child, the dosage will depend on his weight. Children under 12 years of age are given 5-8 mg of medication per kilogram of body weight, every 6 hours. Children over 12 years of age are given 100 mg twice a day for 7 days.
  • Taking pills should continue until the end of the course. It is important to do this even if you feel well, otherwise the infection may recur.
  • If you miss a dose, you need to take the medicine as soon as the patient remembers about it. If it's time to take a new dose, forget about the missed one. You don't have to take two doses together a large number of the drug increases the risk of side effects.

Furadonin exhibits bacteriostatic or bactericidal action by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA, RNA, proteins and cell wall permeability. This contributes to the disruption of metabolic processes in microorganisms and leads to the complete destruction of bacteria. The local effect of Furadonin helps not only the bladder, but the kidneys and urethra.

If you correctly follow the recommendations for taking the drug, then the improvement will come within a few days from the start of therapy. If symptoms persist despite taking Furadonin, another broad-spectrum bacteriostatic and bactericidal drug should be tried. Some bacteria are highly resistant to nitrofurantoin.

The indication for its use is an infectious, inflammatory process in the urinary tract without an established localization (pyelitis, cystitis, non-gonococcal urethritis and pyelonephritis), which are caused by the activity of microorganisms sensitive to nitrofurantoin.

It is worth noting

Before undergoing an operation or dental treatment under anesthesia, you should inform your doctor about taking nitrofurantoin. This substance can interfere with the results of some medical tests.

Furadonin contraindications:

  • Studies have not found teratogenic effects of the drug, however, it can lead to hemolytic anemia in children.
  • Due to the possibility of hemolytic anemia, the use of nitrofurantoin is contraindicated at 38-42 weeks of pregnancy, during childbirth or breastfeeding.
  • The age of the newborn is up to 1 month.
  • Almost complete (anuria) or partial absence of urine (oliguria), significant renal dysfunction. Treatment of this type of patient carries an increased risk of toxicity due to impaired excretion of the drug.
  • Furadonin is also contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin.
  • This medication is not suitable for people with peripheral neuropathy.

How to take Furadonin for cystitis: treatment regimen

Standard treatment regimen: 1 tablet of Furadonin four times a day (immediately before, during or after meals). Taking the medicine with food will help prevent indigestion.

Along with their useful properties Furadonin also has unwanted side effects, although not everyone experiences them. They usually go away as the body adjusts to treatment.

Side effects include:

  1. Loss of appetite, nausea and various abdominal discomfort... How to avoid: Stick to simple foods and avoid highly spicy foods. Remember to take Furadonin after meals.
  2. Diarrhea... How to avoid: Drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids.
  3. Allergic reactions.
  4. Drowsiness, dizziness... Before taking Furadonin for cystitis or other disease, you should make sure that you do not have to drive a car or work with complex and dangerous devices during treatment. Or talk with your doctor about taking another drug.

Rarely, when taking Furadonin, there are signs of pulmonary toxicity (shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, chills, or high fever). In this case, you should seek the help of a doctor.

Advantages of Furadonin tablets, analogues of the drug Furadonin

The use of Furadonin tablets does not lead to inhibition of the general immunological resistance of the body, as is often the case when taking amoxicillin and other antibiotics.

  • The active ingredient of the drug (nitrofurantoin), which is part of the nitrofurate group, not only disrupts the permeability of the cell membrane and protein synthesis in bacteria, but also helps to increase immunity, activating the process of phagocytic activity of leukocyte bodies.
  • In the recommended doses, Furadonin does not cause post-vaccination immunity, which is formed as a result of active immunization.
  • When treating with Furadonin, the dose of the drug in the blood may be less than in the case of using antibiotics.
  • After treatment, bacteria do not develop resistance to the active substance Furadonin. This makes it possible to use this drug both for re-treatment and for the prevention of relapses.
  • Furadonin tablets are cheap (how much depends on the markup of a particular pharmacy, on average, up to 130 rubles) and have a small number of side effects.
  • They do not need to be chewed, put under the tongue and wait a long time for resorption.
  • They have a fast and effective bactericidal and bacteriostatic effect against microorganisms sensitive to nitrofurantoin.

According to the pharmacological action and the composition of Furadonin's analogs are:

  • furazidine;
  • Novo-furan (in the form of enteric-coated tablets and a suspension with 5 mg of nitrofurantoin per ml of the product);
  • furamag;
  • macrobid (in the form of capsules, produced in Canada, USA, Bangladesh, England, Ireland);
  • furasol;
  • furagin;
  • furabid;
  • furazolidone.

These drugs, which contain nitrofurantoin, can be used to treat various types of inflammatory and infectious processes. When using Furadonin or any of its analogs, it should be borne in mind that nitrofurantoin can darken the color of urine to dark yellow or even brownish. There is nothing wrong with that.

These medicines are not compatible with ethyl alcohol. During treatment, it is necessary to completely exclude the use of alcoholic beverages.

Before using the medication, read the information in the description. It is impossible to recommend and give the drug Furadonin to other people, even if they have symptoms similar to cystitis. He may not act on them in the same way as on the patient to whom the doctor recommended Furadonin. The thing is that nitrofurantoin is effective not against all bacteria, but against a small number of them.

The modern pharmacological market offers many drugs to fight inflammatory processes in the bladder. Many years of experience and research show that furadonin in cystitis is one of the effective drugs that allow you to fight this unpleasant ailment.

This disease, in almost 80 percent of cases, is caused by Escherichia coli, in other patients, the cause of the inflammatory process in the bladder cavity is staphylococci (up to 15%), as well as bacteria of the species Klebsiella spp or Proteus mirabilis.

Furadonin is an excellent treatment for cystitis caused by these pathogenic bacteria. At the first symptoms of this disease: frequent urge and painful urination, you should consult your doctor and start taking the drug.

Content of the article:

Furadonin is an effective remedy for cystitis pathogens

Furadonin is an antimicrobial drug with a specialized spectrum of action, the main active component of which is a substance derived from nitrofuran, Nitrofurantoin.

This drug is especially active against groups of bacteria:

  • Escherichia coli;
  • Enterobacter spp .;
  • Klebsiella spp.
  • Proteus spp .;

Furadonin can be used to treat both acute and chronic forms of cystitis.

This medicine is easily absorbed by the body and quickly excreted in the urine. During the period of application, its concentration in the blood is rather insignificant. Due to the fact that furadonin is highly soluble in various liquids, it can give urine a darker shade (brownish color).

Furadonin has not only high activity against these types of pathogens, but also against other infections.

This drug is also active against most bacterial strains:

  • Staphylococcus aureus;
  • gram-positive aerobes;
  • enterococci;
  • gram-negative aerobes.

Protein binding - 60%. Metabolized in the liver and muscle tissue. T 1/2 - 20-25 min. Penetrates the BBB, placental barrier, excreted in breast milk. It is excreted completely by the kidneys (30-50% - unchanged).

Indications

Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract (including pyelonephritis, cystitis) caused by microorganisms sensitive to nitrofurantoin.

Contraindications

Severe disorders of renal excretory function, renal failure, oliguria, deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, pregnancy, early childhood (up to 1 month), hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin, stage II-III failure, liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, acute porphyria, lactation ...

Dosage

The dose for adults is 50-100 mg, the frequency of use is 4 times / day. The daily dose for children is 5-7 mg / kg in 4 divided doses. The duration of the course of treatment is 7 days. If necessary, it is possible to continue treatment for another 3 days (only after urine control for sterility). During long-term maintenance treatment, the dose of nitrofurantoin should be reduced.

Side effects

From the respiratory system:, cough, shortness of breath, pulmonary infiltrates, eosinophilia, interstitial pneumonitis or fibrosis, decreased respiratory function, bronchial asthma attack in patients with a history of asthma.

From the digestive system: a feeling of discomfort in the epigastrium, anorexia, nausea, vomiting; rarely - hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, diarrhea.

From the side of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: peripheral neuropathy, headache, nystagmus, dizziness, drowsiness.

From the hematopoietic system: leukopenia, granulocytopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia (these changes are reversible).

Allergic reactions: urticaria, angioedema, pruritus, rash; very rarely - anaphylactic shock.

Dermatological reactions: exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme.

Others: drug fever, arthralgia, flu-like symptoms are possible, superinfection of the genitourinary tract, often caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Drug interactions

The simultaneous use of nalidixic acid and trisilicate containing magnesium reduces the antibacterial effect of nitrofurantoin.

Nitrofurantoin is incompatible with fluoroquinolones.

With the simultaneous use of drugs that block tubular secretion, reduce the antibacterial effect of nitrofurantoin (by reducing the concentration of nitrofurantoin in the urine) and increase its toxicity (the concentration in the blood increases).

  • Microflora restoration
  • Probiotics
  • In treatment urological diseases a drug called Furadonin is widely used. But is it possible to give this medicine to children and how to use it correctly in childhood?

    Compound

    The active ingredient in Furadonin is nitrofurantoin, which can contain 50 or 100 mg in each tablet. Excipients of the drug are calcium stearate and silicon dioxide, as well as potato starch.

    Release form

    The medicine is produced in the form of round flat tablets with a greenish-yellow or yellow color. They are packed in 10 pieces in foil and polyvinyl chloride cells, and are sold in cardboard boxes of 1-5 contour packs (10-50 tablets).

    Operating principle

    Furadonin is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of nitrofurans. Its active substance penetrates bacteria and disrupts their vital activity, blocking protein synthesis and reducing membrane permeability. The medicine is especially effective for cystitis, which is caused by staphylococci, shigella, escherichia, streptococcus, proteus and other bacteria. About 30-50% of the drug is excreted unchanged through the kidneys, providing an effect in the urinary tract.

    From what age is it allowed to take?

    Furadonin can be given to children over one month old. In the neonatal period, such a medicine is not used. In the annotation to Furadonin, some manufacturers noted a restriction in the use of such a drug up to 3 years of age, therefore prescribing medication at 2 years of age and younger children should be monitored by a doctor. Most often, the drug is prescribed at the age of over 5 years, when the child can swallow the pill without any problems.

    Indications

    Furadonin is prescribed in childhood for diseases of the urinary tract of an infectious and inflammatory nature, if they are provoked by microorganisms sensitive to its active substance.

    Such a medicine is indicated when a child develops:

    • Cystitis.
    • Pyelonephritis.
    • Urethritis.
    • Pielita.
    • Pielocystitis.

    It can also be prescribed to prevent infections during urinary tract catheterization, cystoscopy, or any urological surgery, for example, if a child needs 10 years surgery ureteral reflux.

    Contraindications

    • Renal failure began and the excretory function was significantly impaired.
    • Revealed oliguria.
    • Heart failure is detected (second or third stage).
    • There is chronic liver inflammation or cirrhosis.
    • The sensitivity to the components of the drug is increased.
    • Revealed acute porphyria.
    • The enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is lacking.
    • Less than one month old.
    • Glomerulonephritis was diagnosed.

    For adults, the drug is not prescribed during pregnancy, as well as with breastfeeding, since the medicine will enter the child's body when feeding.

    Side effects

    In Furadonin, side effects on various organ systems of the child are often noted:

    • Taking the drug can cause shortness of breath and cough, as well as the appearance of chest pain. In some children, this medicine provokes the onset of pulmonary infiltrates, pneumonitis, or fibrosis. If a child has asthma, Furadonin can cause seizures.
    • The digestive system may respond to taking Furadonin with nausea, abdominal discomfort, or vomiting. Less commonly, pain, diarrhea, or jaundice occur. Occasionally, a child may develop hepatitis.
    • Taking Furadonin can provoke headaches, drowsiness or dizziness. In children with hypovitaminosis, anemia, impaired water-salt balance, renal failure, or diabetes mellitus, this drug causes peripheral neuropathy.
    • The drug can adversely affect blood formation, provoking a decrease in the number of leukocytes due to granulocytes (sometimes to complete agranulocytosis), as well as thrombocytopenia. Moreover, side effect Furadonin is megaloblastic or hemolytic anemia. Note that such blood changes are reversible and disappear after drug withdrawal.
    • Dermatitis and erythema may occur from taking Furadonin.
    • The medicine can cause allergies, such as an itchy rash, hives, or Quincke's edema. In rare cases, anaphylactic reaction is possible.
    • Occasionally, after taking Furadonin, a child may experience fever, joint pain, and other flu-like symptoms.
    • The use of such a drug can cause superinfection of the urinary tract (often due to the activity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa).

    Instructions for use and dosage

    The medicine is taken orally in a single dose prescribed by a doctor and washed down with a significant amount of water. Since the tablet is bitter, you should not chew it. For kids early age a suspension is used, for the preparation of which the drug is dissolved in water, sweet juice or milk.

    In childhood, the dosage of Furadonin is calculated based on the baby's body weight. For each kilogram of the child's weight, you need from 5 to 7-8 mg of the drug. Multiplying the weight by the selected dose, the daily amount of Furadonin is obtained, which is divided into four doses. For example, the weight of a child at the age of 6 years is 20 kg, when multiplied by 5 you get daily dose 100 mg, so we give the child 25 mg four times a day.

    The duration of treatment with Furadonin is 1 week. If after 7 days the doctor sees the need to extend therapy (assesses the urine test for sterility), the drug can be prescribed for another three days.

    Overdose

    If you exceed the dose of Furadonin for a child, vomiting occurs. In such a situation, the baby needs to be given a lot of liquid so that the medicine is quickly excreted in the urine. In severe cases, dialysis is possible, which will quickly eliminate the consequences of an overdose.

    Interaction with other drugs

    • If, simultaneously with the use of Furadonin, you give the child antacids with magnesium trisilicate or nalidixic acid, then the antibacterial effect of the drug will decrease.
    • The drug should not be given in conjunction with drugs of the fluoroquinolone group.
    • A decrease in the antibacterial effect was also seen with the joint appointment of Furadonin with drugs that block tubular secretion. This combination of drugs will decrease the concentration active substance in urine, and will also increase its amount in the blood, which will make the drug toxic for the child.

    Terms of sale

    The medicine is sold by prescription in pharmacies.

    Storage conditions and shelf life

    Furadonin packaging should be stored in a place where children cannot access. It should be protected from direct sunlight and dry, in which the temperature will not exceed 25 degrees Celsius. The shelf life of the drug is indicated on the package and is 4 years from the date of release.
