Mother's prayer for peace. Prayer for the repose of the soul of the deceased. How to read prayers and remember deceased parents at home

Complete collection and description: prayer for the departed up to 40 days to read at home for the spiritual life of a believer.

Prayers for the deceased are considered an important church ritual that helps the soul of the deceased find peace. What prayer to read for the deceased up to 40 days every day, what prayer for the repose of the soul up to 1 year for parents, relatives, husbands, wives should be read in order to correctly remember a newly deceased (recently departed to another world) loved one, a long-dead father, mother?

For up to 40 days, the souls of the departed need prayer. Prayers for the deceased, as a rule, are read by relatives at home or in church; the texts of the prayers can be short or long; on memorial days, prayers spoken in one’s own words are suitable.

For the first 3 days after death, according to the narration of the Holy Fathers, the soul is near the body. After 3 days, the soul of the newly departed deceased passes from earthly life to the spiritual world, where each soul has the opportunity to bear responsibility for the earthly deeds committed, to answer for the sins committed. On the 40th day, God's Judgment ends, and the soul moves to heaven or hell. The first 40 days are very important for the souls of the departed; prayers are especially necessary during these days.

Razgadamus considers it educational. The most important prayers for Orthodox Christians are prayers for the departed; an Orthodox prayer is read at the Liturgy in the church during the service, during the memorial service by the priests. At home, in addition to prayer, you can read the Psalter - this is the sacred book of psalms, which is read collectively, individually in church or at home in front of icons. Psalms for the departed can be read on the anniversary of the death of parents, husband, wife, or on any other day; they should be read correctly at home with a burning candle or lamp.

How to pray on the days of remembrance, what prayers for the departed should Orthodox Christians have? We offer the most powerful Orthodox prayers of remembrance, which can be read on Parental Memorial Saturdays, after the death of parents (father, mother) for up to 40 days, or of a deceased wife, husband, relative every day. After Easter, according to the Orthodox church calendar, every year Orthodox Christians celebrate the holiday of Radonitsa or Parents' Day (in 2017 the date is April 25); We hope that the accessible texts published in this article will be used by many believers on the approaching day of remembrance.

Prayer for the repose of the soul of the deceased

Prayer for deceased parents

Prayer for the deceased up to 40 days

A short prayer for the dead

Most of all, I believe in the power of clear text. I read a short prayer today, I liked it, I think the souls of mom and dad heard me.

It is imperative to touch on mourning topics so as not to forget about those who died, even if they died a long time ago, but need our help - prayer for the repose!

As far as I know, the canons of Orthodoxy for the newly deceased in the church, first of all, they order a memorial service so that the Lord will have mercy on his soul; prayer, if it is strong, helps both the deceased and the relatives mourning a loved one

I’m ashamed to say, I didn’t even know that there are special texts for the repose that can be read in a cemetery, etc. and have you never noticed that anyone prayed at the graves?

It is important not where to pray for the dead (at home, in a cemetery, in church), how to do it - consciously or as some people read the text automatically, memorizing it without delving into the meaning.

after my parents died I prayed until 40 days and after 40 days from the date of death. First, my father died, and then my mother died 3 months later. I understood from the priest’s story that it is better to read for the newly deceased in church during a memorial service, and at home of course.

The souls of the dead require prayer for up to 40 days, both as newly appointed ones and after passing through purgatory. We need to remember and not forget about those who have already passed into another world constantly, they feel our care - we mean souls.

If I correctly understood the meaning of the text of the prayer, can it be read about the repose and pardon of the soul of a deceased person?

This is why funeral prayers are read, so that the Lord will have mercy on the soul of the newly deceased and give him the Kingdom of Heaven.

I chose for myself a short prayer for the departed, REST IN THE LORD. I read it on Radonitsa, Parents' Saturdays on memorial days of remembrance from the day of death or on the birthday of parents. The text of the prayer is focused and intelligible, and tears well up when you read it.

I asked at the church and they said that you can remember the deceased on any day. It is better to order a prayer service more often, especially for those who have recently died under 1 year of age.

It is best to regularly order a prayer service for the dead in church. Reading a prayer once a year is not enough.

Some people say once a year. You need to remember the dead with prayer every time you come to the cemetery, and TWO times: first immediately upon arrival, then before leaving.

I didn’t know that the prayer for repose in the cemetery is read twice?! I'll find out - thanks for the tip.

A newly deceased person is a person who has died if no more than forty days have passed since his death. According to Orthodox belief, after death, during the first two days, the soul remains on earth and visits the places where a person’s earthly life took place. On the third day the soul is transferred to the spiritual world. Orthodox prayers of relatives for the newly deceased help the soul to go through the ordeals of the air. The Lord is able, through the fervent and sincere prayers of loved ones, to forgive the sins of the deceased. Liberation from sins makes possible the resurrection of the soul for eternal blissful life.

Day of death. What to do

You need to plead for the defendant before the trial, not after it. After death, when the soul goes through ordeals, judgment is carried out, one must intercede for it: pray and perform deeds of mercy.

Why is the death of the body necessary?

For many people, death is a means of salvation from spiritual death.

Death reduces the amount of total evil on earth. What would life be like if there were Cain murderers forever, betraying the Lord of Judah and others like them?

The Holy Fathers of the Church teach that the most powerful and effective means for the departed to ask for God’s mercy is to remember them at the Liturgy.

What foods can you put on the eve?

The Lord only ends a person’s life when he sees him ready to move into eternity or when he sees no hope for his correction.

Anyone who lived piously, did good deeds, wore a cross, repented, confessed and received communion - by the grace of God, he can be granted a blessed life in eternity and regardless of the time of death.

If the deceased wished to be cremated, it is not a sin to violate this dying will.

Why are funerals held for 40 days?

And according to another popular belief, it is on the 40th day of the wake that the soul returns to its home for the whole day, and leaves only after it has been carried out.

Sometimes they even carefully prepared for such a coming of the soul, making the bed in the evening with a white sheet and covering it with a blanket.

Prayers for the newly deceased servant of God up to 40 days

The prayers are written mainly in Old Church Slavonic. There are a lot of them. Depending on the cause of death and who died. There is also a prayer for those who died and did not have time to be baptized. Among them is a prayer to the Mother of God for the newly deceased. She is the mother of the Lord, and prayer to her can help soften the Heavenly King. You can find it in almost any prayer book. The purpose of a memorial dinner is to remember the deceased person, pray for the repose of his soul, provide psychological support to those in need, and thank people for their participation and help. You cannot organize a dinner with the goal of impressing the guests with expensive and delicious dishes, boasting of an abundance of dishes, or feeding them to their fullest. The main thing is not food, but uniting in grief and supporting those who are having a hard time.

You should not perceive a wake as a feast.

Visiting the grave of a deceased person is an obligatory part of the funeral ritual. You need to take flowers and a candle with you. It is customary to carry a pair of flowers to a cemetery; even numbers are a symbol of life and death. Laying flowers is the best way to show respect to the deceased.

When you arrive, you should light a candle and pray for peace of mind, then you can simply stand and be silent, remembering the good moments from the life of the deceased person.

Noisy conversations and discussions are not allowed at the cemetery; everything should take place in an atmosphere of calm and tranquility.

Prayer for the deceased up to 40 days

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the life of Thy eternal newly departed servant (or Thy servant), named, and as good and a lover of mankind, forgiving sins and consuming iniquities, weaken, forgive and forgive all his voluntary and involuntary sins, exposing him to Thy holy second coming into the communion of Thy eternal blessings, for the sake of the One who has faith in Thee, the true God and Lover of mankind. For You are the resurrection and the life and the rest of Your servant, named Christ our God. And we send glory to You, with Your beginningless Father and with the Most Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, Amen.

Help yourself and your loved ones

Praying for the newly deceased is the highest form of asceticism. The fruits of which are recognized only at the Last Judgment. When people ask the Lord for something, they get what they want. For this they thank the Lord. If you pronounce them with a pure heart and good intentions, then many sins of a person who has already died will be forgiven. The wrath of the King of Heaven will be replaced by mercy.

Prayer for the newly deceased is the fulfillment of the main twofold commandment. She talks about love for God and neighbor. Loving your neighbor does not mean simply helping him in his worldly life. This means helping him when nothing depends on him. He came to the Lord, and his soul was stained with sins.

Such a visit signified respect for the deceased and his family. The clergy were formally invited to the commemoration, in fact trying not to participate in it.

When arriving at the house from the cemetery, they always washed their hands and dried them with a towel. They also cleansed themselves by touching the stove and bread with their hands; they used to even specially heat a bathhouse and wash in it, and change their clothes. This custom among the Slavs is obviously connected with ideas about the cleansing power of fire and is aimed at protecting oneself from the deceased.

During the time the deceased was taken to the cemetery and buried in the house, preparations for the meal were completed. They arranged the furniture, washed the floors, swept away all the garbage that had accumulated over three days from the large corner to the threshold, collected it and burned it. The floors needed to be washed thoroughly, especially the corner, handles, and threshold. After cleaning, the room was fumigated with incense or juniper smoke.

Funeral feasts also existed in ancient times, when pagans ate food at the graves of their dead fellow tribesmen. This tradition became part of Christian rituals, and ancient Christian funeral meals were transformed in later times into modern commemorations.

There are also so-called calendar commemorations associated with certain holidays that accompany the economic and everyday life of peasants, and which are included in church rituals. In an effort to bury the deceased according to folk rituals and in accordance with church rules, relatives and friends of the deceased often formally follow the performance of ritual actions, without going into their meaning.

The entire space (according to Christian mythology) represents several judgment seats, where the incoming soul is convicted by demons of sins. Each judgment (ordeal) corresponds to a specific sin; evil spirits are called tax collectors.

The number forty is significant and is often found in the Holy Scriptures.

For funeral meals, they gathered first of all relatives, closest friends, and earlier also the poor and the poor. Those who washed and dressed the deceased were especially invited. After the meal, all relatives of the deceased were supposed to go to the bathhouse to wash themselves.

They always paid money for funeral services until the fortieth day.

Compliance with the norms in the Orthodox funeral meal requires that before it begins, one of the loved ones reads the 17th kathisma from the Psalter in front of a lit lamp or candle.

Currently, the funeral table menu also consists of a certain set of dishes, depending on what days the funeral falls on (Lenten or Fast).

We tried to have an even number of dishes on the table; changing them was not practiced, but we adhered to a certain sequence of meals.

In real life, there are rarely any wakes without alcoholic beverages.

Sweet and sparkling alcoholic drinks are usually excluded. The presence of alcoholic beverages at the funeral table is partly explained by the fact that they help relieve emotional tension and stress associated with the loss of loved ones. The table conversation is mainly devoted to the remembrance of the deceased, reminiscing with kind words about his deeds on earth, and is also aimed at consoling relatives.

We ate as usual with tablespoons or dessert spoons, trying not to use knives and forks. In some cases, if there was silverware in the family, the relatives of the deceased used silver spoons, which also serves as evidence that silver was given magical cleansing properties.

With each change of dishes, the Orthodox tried to read a prayer. The funeral table was often decorated with branches of spruce, lingonberries, myrtle, and black mourning ribbon. The tablecloth was laid in a single color, not necessarily white, but often in muted tones, which could be decorated at the edges with black ribbon.

Folk tradition also regulated the order of placing people at the funeral table. Usually the owner of the house, the head of the family, sat at the head of the table, on both sides of which were relatives in order of proximity of kinship by seniority.

The next day, crumbs of bread were carried to the grave, thereby, as it were, introducing the deceased to information about how the wake took place.

The Orthodox ended the meal with a prayer of gratitude: “We give thanks, O Christ our God...” and “It is worthy to eat...”, as well as a wish for well-being and an expression of sympathy for the relatives of the deceased. After eating, the spoon was usually placed on the table and not on the plate. By the way, it should be mentioned that according to custom, if during lunch a spoon fell under the table, then it was not recommended to pick it up.

There was also a custom of leaving the device with a glass of vodka covered with bread for up to forty days. They believed that if the liquid decreases, it means that the soul is drinking. Vodka and snacks were also left at the grave, although this has nothing to do with Orthodox rituals.

After the guests left, the household, if they had time, usually washed themselves before sunset.

All doors and windows were tightly closed at night. At dusk they already tried not to cry, so as not to “call the deceased from the cemetery,” according to popular belief.

Naturally, in the eyes of others, even thoughts of remarriage before the end of the period of mourning were considered indecent.

In most cases, a widower mourned for six months.

Most often not new. Currently, if there are no suitable clothes or headdress in the wardrobe, they buy a black dress (suit) and a headscarf.

Previously, during mourning, they did not even try to take special care of clothes, because, according to popular beliefs, careful care of them was a manifestation of disrespect for the memory of the deceased. There was a widespread custom during this period not to cut hair, not to do elegant, voluminous hairstyles, and in some cases, even to braid girls’ hair.

In the families of believers, mourning was celebrated with intense prayers, reading religious books, abstinence in food and pastime.

An arbitrary reduction of mourning in a society with a certain way of life and observance of folk traditions immediately catches the eye and can cause condemnation. In modern conditions, as a rule, such a long period of mourning as before is not observed, especially in the city.

All this is individual and in each specific case depends on a number of circumstances. When wearing mourning, one should not show boundless grief by demonstrating it to others.

Prayers for the newly deceased servant of God up to 40 days

The birth of a person brings great joy to the family. Unfortunately, the date of death has already been marked in the book of life. It depends only on the person how and with what he will come to this day. How will he live the period allotted to him?

Day of death. What to do

When the day of death approaches, the Lord calls his servant to himself. The body loses the ability to move, the heart stops. After which the body is in the coffin, but the soul continues to live. Now her journey to another, eternal life begins. The path is not easy and thorny.

According to the Holy Fathers, the soul hovers above the earth for three days. She mourns the separation from her body. The relatives of the deceased also grieve with their souls. It’s not easy to believe that a loved one is no longer around. They remember all the good things associated with him and curse fate that she decreed it this way.

In fact, this is not the only thing to worry about. It is much more necessary to grieve about what will happen to the soul of the deceased. Where she will find peace. After all, not everyone manages to live life with dignity. But even when leading a respectable lifestyle, there are many sins that do not allow the soul to enter heaven. They are deposited throughout a person's life.

Help a loved one

People confess during life and before death. But it is simply impossible to remember absolutely all your sins. They can either be very small - you can forget about them. Or they were committed so long ago that it is very difficult to remember them. It is not always possible to confess before death.

In such a situation, you should rely only on the help of relatives. They must pray for the soul of the deceased. Immediately after the departure of a loved one to another world, it is necessary to read the “Prayer for the Departure of the Soul.” It is printed on the first page of the psalter and is in the prayer books.

The text of the prayer is simple. It can also help if a person is suffering in agony and death cannot come to him. By reading the prayer, you can ease the torment, and the Lord will quickly call him to himself.

Read the psalter

After this, it is recommended to read the psalter further. When praying for the newly deceased for up to 3 days, you need to read from one to several kathismas per day. The amount depends on the strength of the person praying. After reading the psalter to the end, you should start over.

Some relatives trust the reading of the psalter to strangers. They simply pay for their services and consider the job done. But in fact, the Holy Fathers and the Church unanimously say that prayer is more soulful if it is read by a relative. He puts his whole soul into it. All your suffering is about the deceased.

Prayer to the Mother of God

The prayers are written mainly in Old Church Slavonic. Therefore, they are difficult not only to pronounce, but also to understand. In this case, it is impossible to pronounce the words of prayers sincerely. To do this, many prayer books offer prayers for the newly deceased in Russian.

Journeys of the soul

After three days, the soul appears before the Lord. This occurs after the funeral service in the church and burial of the body. It is worth remembering that not everyone can have funeral services in church. Under the ban on funeral services:

The soul worships God, and he gives her the opportunity for 6 days to admire how they are having fun in paradise. How the saints spend their time there. If the soul is sinful, then it is tormented by sorrows and resentments for a life lived incorrectly. When praying for the newly deceased servant of God, you should not forget about this. Daily appeals to God from family and friends will help alleviate suffering. It is necessary to sincerely read prayers and be baptized.

On the 9th day the soul appears before the Lord. The Lord sends her to hell. There she watches the torment of sinners. He sees how the souls of those who lived their lives idly suffer. In dislike of the Lord. Prayers for the newly deceased will help to beg forgiveness before the Lord and alleviate the suffering of the soul.

On the fortieth day, the soul appears before the Lord, and at this time its place of residence is determined. Therefore, prayer for the deceased up to 40 days is important. Fervent prayer can soften the Lord. His mercy can help a soul go to heaven or, while in hell, endure less torment.

Nobody except us

You can read prayers for the newly deceased at home or in church. After the death of a loved one, you need to go to the temple. Submit a note for the repose of the soul of the newly deceased servant of God. It would be a good idea to order a magpie for repose and an everlasting prayer service. After returning to their temple, candles are lit and placed in salt. They put water on and put in a piece of bread. The main thing is not to forget to place the image of the Savior. All prayer readings are performed before him.

You can order sorokoust in any church. If the commemoration will be long-term, it is better to order it at the monastery. After all, there are services there every day and throughout the day. According to Christian custom, it is recommended that the body be buried rather than cremated. Make-up is considered a special forced measure.

Prayer for the deceased for up to 40 days is a special type of mercy. It connects a person and the Lord, like the umbilical cord of a child with its mother. Even the worst sinner, being in worldly life, can change something in it. It is impossible to become a righteous person overnight. This is hard work, and not everyone can do it. But being alive can change your life. After death, nothing can be changed. All the hope of the soul rests on the shoulders of loved ones and relatives. She asks them to help. He asks to beg for a better fate from the Lord.

Help yourself and your loved ones

Praying for the newly deceased is the highest form of asceticism. The fruits of which are recognized only at the Last Judgment. When people ask the Lord for something, they get what they want. For this they thank the Lord. They praise him. Prayers for the newly deceased, of course, reach the ears of the Lord, but their result will be known only at the Last Judgment. Having come to it, the human soul will learn how effective they were. If you pronounce them with a pure heart and good intentions, then many sins of a person who has already died will be forgiven. The wrath of the King of Heaven will be replaced by mercy. And then, at the Last Judgment, the deceased will bow at the feet of his friend or relative and thank him for this.

Prayer for the newly deceased is the fulfillment of the main twofold commandment. She talks about love for God and neighbor. Loving your neighbor does not mean simply helping him in his worldly life. This means helping him when nothing depends on him. He came to the Lord, and his soul was stained with sins. The prayers of loved ones will help to whiten her and soften the Lord’s anger.

Prayers for day 40

It is on the fortieth day that the soul stops hovering over the abyss. Her fate is finally determined. On this day it is the hardest for the loved ones of the deceased. An unhealed wound in the soul bleeds, and faith in a better future does not come. Prayer for 40 days will help ease mental suffering.

In the temple, you should ask the Lord to take the soul of the deceased and give peace to the soul of your loved one. Before this, light candles for the repose of your soul. Then, having crossed yourself and taking three candles with you, you can go home. These candles are lit there and, looking at them, a prayer is said to the Lord for 40 days (it can be found in the prayer book).

For forty days it is worth not only praying at home, but also visiting the temple. If the deceased is baptized, then he can be mentioned in notes given in the temple. If not, then you can only pray for him yourself. And it doesn’t matter where - at home or in church.

In addition to prayers, you can bring food and serve it to the temple. This will be considered alms and will go for the remembrance of the soul. The clergy will remember him at the meal. Just be sure to say the name of God's servant.

Mourning should be worn for at least 40 days. If an internal need arises, you can do this longer.

After this, mental suffering will subside a little and the strength to live on will appear. The future will be without the deceased, but such is life. And it continues no matter what. The main thing is to believe in the best, and then the pain will subside faster.

Memorial prayer

rest, O Lord, the souls of your servant

Orthodox Christianity, like any religion, is built on communication with God through prayer. The prayer can be a request for the granting of health, success, a peaceful journey, as well as a prayer for the repose of the soul of the deceased. In general, in Orthodoxy it is customary to constantly, if not daily, pray for the departed. It is believed that the Lord forgives the sins of those who pray for the souls of the dead, since they themselves can no longer change the situation in which they find themselves in the afterlife. Funeral prayer is an opportunity to atone for sins committed during life.

Prayers for remembrance

Amen.

Prayer for the repose of Orthodox soldiers killed in battle for the faith and Fatherland

Invincible, incomprehensible and strong in battle, Lord our God! You, according to Your inscrutable destinies, send the Angel of Death to another under his roof, to another in the village, to another on the sea, to another on the battlefield from the weapons of war, spewing out terrible and deadly forces, destroying the bodies, tearing apart the limbs and crushing the bones of the warriors; We believe that according to Your, Lord, wise vision, such death is accepted by the defenders of the faith and the Fatherland.
We pray to Thee, Most Blessed Lord, remember in Thy Kingdom the Orthodox soldiers who were killed in battle, and receive them into Thy heavenly palace, as wounded martyrs, stained with their own blood, as if they suffered for Thy Holy Church and for the Fatherland, which Thou hast blessed, as Thy heritage . We pray to Thee, accept the warriors who have gone to You into the hosts of the hosts of the Heavenly Forces, accept them by Thy mercy, as those who fell in battle for the independence of the Russian land from the yoke of the infidels, as if they defended the Orthodox faith from enemies, who defended the Fatherland in difficult times from foreign hordes; Remember, Lord, and all those who fought a good deed for the ancient preserved Apostolic Orthodoxy, for the Russian land that You have chosen, sanctified and holy in its language, and the enemies of the Cross and Orthodoxy offered both fire and sword. We pray to Thee, Lord, that their wounds will be medicine and oil poured out on their sinful sores. Look down from heaven, O God, and see the tears of the orphans who have lost their fathers, and accept the tender prayers of their sons and daughters for them; hear the prayerful sighs of fathers and mothers who have lost their children; hear, O most gracious Lord, the inconsolable widows who have lost their spouses; brothers and sisters crying for their relatives - and remember the men killed in strength and in the prime of life, the elders, in strength of spirit and courage; look at our heartfelt sorrows, see our lamentation and have mercy, O Most Good One, towards those who pray to You, Lord! Thou hast taken away our dear ones from us, but do not deprive us of Thy mercy: hear our prayer and accept Thy servants (names) who have mercifully gone to Thee. call them to Your palace, like valiant warriors who laid down their lives for faith and the Fatherland on the battlefields; accept them into the host of Your chosen ones, as those who served You with faith and righteousness, and rest them in Your Kingdom, like the martyrs who went to You wounded, ulcerated and betraying their spirit in terrible torment; brought into Your holy city all Your servants (names) who are ever remembered by us, like valiant warriors who fought courageously in the terrible battles of which we remember them; their garments there are in fine linen, bright and clean, as here they have whitened their vestments in their blood, and are worthy of the crowns of martyrdom; make them collectively participants in the triumph and glory of the victors who fought under the banner of Your Cross with the world, flesh and the devil; place them in the host of glorious passion-bearers, good-victorious martyrs, the righteous and all Your saints. Amen.

Prayer for those who have died due to sudden (sudden) death

Inscrutable are Your destinies, Lord! Thy ways are unsearchable! Give breath to every creature and bring everything from those that do not exist into being, You send the Angel of death to him on a Day he does not know, and at an hour he does not expect; You snatch him from the hand of death, granting him life with his last breath; Be long-suffering to the new one and give him time for repentance; You cut it like a grain with the sword of death in one hour, in the twinkling of an eye; You strike him with thunder and lightning, you burn him with flame, and you betray him as food for wild beasts; You command them to be swallowed up by the waves and abysses of the sea and the abysses of the earth; You kidnap them with a destructive ulcer, where death, like a reaper, reaps and separates father or mother from their children, brother from brother, husband from wife, tears the baby from the mother’s womb, casts lifeless the mighty of the earth, the rich and the poor. What the hell is this? Your look is wondrous and perplexing to us, O God! But Lord, Lord! You are only One, knowing everything, weighing why this happens and why it should be, as if Your servant (Your servant) (name) was consumed in the blink of an eye by the gap of death. If you are punishing him (her) for his (her) many, grave sins, we pray to You, O many-merciful and all-merciful Lord, not with Your wrath do you reprove him (her) and punish him completely, but, according to Your goodness and according to Your unconditional mercy, show him (her) great Your mercy is in the forgiveness and forgiveness of sins. What if your deceased servant (thy servant), in this life thinking about the Day of Judgment, recognized his own repentance and desired to bring you fruits worthy of repentance, but not having achieved this, was called by you to be on the day of his not knowing, and in an hour for which I was not expecting, for this sake we pray to Thee, Most Gracious and Most Merciful Lord, to correct, arrange, complete the unfinished work of saving him (her), the unfinished repentance, which Thy eyes have seen, with Thy ineffable goodness and love for mankind; The imams have only one hope in Your endless mercy: You have judgment and punishment, You have truth and inexhaustible mercy; You punish, but at the same time you are merciful; beeshi, and at the same time you are acceptable; We diligently pray to Thee, O Lord our God, do not punish the one suddenly called to You with Thy Last Judgment, but have mercy, have mercy on him (them) and do not cast him away from Thy presence. Oh, it is terrible to suddenly fall into Thy hands, O Lord, and to appear before Thy impartial judgment! It is terrible to come to You without gracious guidance, without Repentance and communion of Your Holy, terrible and life-giving Mysteries, Lord! If Thy servant (Thy servant) who has suddenly died and is remembered by us is so much a sinner, so much guilty of condemnation at Your righteous court, we pray to You, have mercy on him (her), not condemn him (s) to eternal torment, to eternal death; Be patient with us, give us the length of our days, so that we may pray to You all our days for Your departed servant(s), until you hear us and accept by Your mercy the one who suddenly departed to You; and grant us, Master, to wash away his (her) sins with tears of contrition and our sighs before You, so that Your servant (Your servant) (name) may not be brought down by his sin to a place of torment (name), but may he dwell in a place of rest . You Yourself, Lord, command to strike at the door of Your mercy, we pray to You, O Most Generous King, and we will not cease to beg Your mercy and cry out with the repentant David: have mercy, have mercy on Your servant, O God, according to Your great mercy. If You are dissatisfied with our words, with this little prayer of ours, we beseech You, Lord, with faith in Your saving merits, with trust in the redemptive and miraculous power of Your sacrifice, offered by You for the sins of the whole world; We pray to Thee, O Sweetest Jesus! You are the Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, you were crucified for our salvation! We pray to Thee, as our Savior and Redeemer, save and have mercy and deliver eternal torment from the soul of Thy servant (Thy servant) (name) who has suddenly died, so often remembered by us, and do not leave him to perish forever, but make you worthy to reach Your quiet refuge and rest there, where all Your saints rest. Together we pray to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ our God, by Thy mercy accept all Thy servants (names) who suddenly came to Thee, who were covered by water, who were embraced by the coward, who were killed by murderers, who were hit by fire, hail, snow, frost, hunger and the spirit of the storm, who were killed , thunder and lightning struck, struck a destructive ulcer, or died by some other guilt, by Your will and permission, we pray to You, accept them under Your mercy and resurrect them into eternal, holy and blessed life. Amen.

Prayer for the newly deceased

Holy Lady Theotokos! We resort to You, our Intercessor: You are a quick helper, our never-ending intercessor with God! Most of all, we pray to Thee at this hour: help Thy newly departed servant (Thy servant) (name) to cross this terrible and unknown path; We pray to Thee, Lady of the world, by Thy power to drive away from his (her) fear-driven soul the terrible powers of dark spirits, so that they may be confused and put to shame before Thee; free the air tax collectors from torture, destroy their councils and overthrow them as malicious enemies. Be her, O All-Merciful Lady Theotokos, an intercessor and protector from the airy prince of darkness, the tormentor and the terrible paths of the champion; We pray to You, Most Holy Theotokos, to protect us through Your honorable robe, so that He may pass from earth to heaven without fear and without restraint. We pray to Thee, our Intercessor, intercede for Thy servant (Thy servant) with Thy motherhood before the Lord with boldness; We pray to You, our Help, help him (her), who has to be judged even before the Last Judgment Seat, help him to be justified before God, as the Creator of heaven and earth, and implore Your Only Begotten Son, the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, may he rest the deceased in the bosom of Abraham with the righteous and all the saints. Amen.

When do they pray for repose?

The Orthodox religion defines death as the beginning of a new, eternal life. All earthly life is built on preparing the soul for heavenly life through our actions, good deeds and prayers. However, no one on earth can know where the soul of a loved one or loved one is. Therefore, prayer for the repose of the relatives begins to be performed immediately after death, so that the Lord forgives his sins and grants the deceased salvation from hell.

Prayers begin to be recited when a person is near death, which are called “Proceeding the departure of the soul from the body.” They are aimed at asking for relief from the torment of separation of the soul from the body. After death and before the funeral, day and night, the relatives of the deceased read the psalter, which is believed to bring relief to the soul and relatives of the deceased. In addition, on the day of death, a special prayer rule is ordered for the deceased in the church - the sorokoust. Immediately before the burial, the body of the deceased is buried in the church, where everyone prays for the repose of the soul.

At the first wake, immediately after the cemetery, they repeatedly pray for the repose of the newly deceased. The Church does not allow Orthodox Christians to drink alcohol in a cemetery or during a funeral service; this defiles the souls of the deceased. On memorial days, it is recommended to come to the temple, give notes of repose in the shop, pray and light candles for the crucifix. Of the first days, the most important is the fortieth day after death. It is believed that on this day the soul appears for judgment before God, so it is recommended to gather a large memorial table and invite all friends to help the soul of the deceased with common prayers for repose.

The prayer for repose is read during the morning and evening prayers. On Saturday, in every Orthodox church a general prayer is performed for the forgiveness of sins of the dead - a memorial service or lithium. Of course, the priest can pray for the souls of the departed every day; a detailed schedule can be found in the temple. The Church does not pray only for the souls of suicides. God does not forgive people who have committed this terrible sin. However, due to the ban on the constant commemoration of the souls of people who have committed suicide, the church still makes a reservation in the form of one day a year on which a prayer is still made for the repose of the soul of the deceased, thereby alleviating his suffering.

So, prayer for the repose of the departed is performed daily. Prayer for the repose of the soul of the deceased is aimed at easing the fate of the soul and forgiveness of sins committed during life. The Orthodox Church teaches the importance of praying for our dead. When remembering your loved ones who have passed away, read a short prayer; it will give peace to their souls.

Short memorial prayers

Be merciful to him, and have faith in You instead of deeds, and rest with Your saints as You are Generous: for there is no man who will live and not sin. Thou art the One besides all sin, and Thy righteousness is righteousness forever, and Thou art the One God of mercies and generosity, and love for mankind, and to You we send glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. (Bow)

We continue the theme of remembering loved ones. The loss is especially difficult because it seems irreversible. But as Christians, people must remember that there is an unseen world where souls will meet in due time. In the meantime, prayers must be read for the deceased - there is a special procedure for up to 40 days.

What to read

To better understand the meaning of memorial actions, one must understand what exactly happens to the soul of a deceased person after his death. It is believed that until 40 days his future is not yet determined. That is why prayer during this period should be intensified. After all, beyond the line that is crossed after the soul separates from the body, a person can no longer influence his future and has no opportunity to repent. All this must be done during the earthly journey. Relatives can help, and in this way they develop their spirituality.

The first step is to order the following prayers for the deceased:

  • At home, the Canon for the same deceased is read - daily, only up to 40 days.
  • funeral service;
  • proskomedia (sorokoust) - can be served immediately, no need to wait 3 days;
  • the indefatigable Psalter.

All this is done immediately after death, but in any case before 40 days. The priest must be brought to the house for the funeral service, or the body of the deceased must be delivered to the temple. Previously, he was left in the church at night, one of his relatives read psalms all night. For up to 3 days, the deceased is still near the body. Therefore, you should not be too upset or cry, so as not to detain your soul.

  • The frequency for most prayers is arbitrary; the more, the better. Only the funeral service is held once. You can order everything else for any period of time.
  • Until 40 days, a deceased person is called newly deceased, then - deceased.

The best way to help in such a situation is to read prayers. Of course, there are numerous distractions, but only communication with the Lord can give peace to the soul. In the Orthodox denomination, they care very much about the deceased members of the church. They are considered alive, therefore they are remembered during the main service - the Liturgy. In it, a bloodless sacrifice is made to God, including for those who have already passed from life to death. According to the teachings of the church, these people are waiting for the general resurrection and judgment.

Orthodox traditions

Already the first Christians realized the importance of the period that lasts up to 40 days after death. The first permissive (farewell) prayers are attributed to Theodosius of Pechersk; today they are accepted to be placed in the hand of the deceased. The famous John of Damascus wrote many poems (stichera), which today are included in the funeral service. There is also a special rite that is read directly over the dying person.

If the death is not sudden, you should definitely invite a priest! He will conduct confession, communion, and read the necessary prayers specifically for this occasion. The soul needs this in order to more easily enter a new world.

For 40 days, relatives of the deceased should read the Psalter every day, you can choose, but usually this is the 17th kathisma. You need to print out the version with accents and Russian font. In the prayers that alternate with the Psalms, the necessary name is substituted.

  • The condition for church commemoration is the fact that the deceased was baptized in the Orthodox Church. Even if he was not a church member, notes should be accepted. It is believed that before the general judgment, everyone has a chance for God's mercy.
  • It is forbidden to submit notes for suicides. But you can light candles and pray for them at home.

For funeral services, a special set is sold in church shops; you need to purchase it. The priest, as a rule, needs to be delivered. Judge for yourself whether it is convenient to travel on the subway in vestments, with a censer, and how long it will take, because the priest is needed in more than one place. Not only relatives can read prayers for the deceased. It is not for nothing that it is customary to give alms for the deceased. The beggars should be called by name and asked for their prayers. The more there are, the better.

Often people who stand directly on the porch of a church building have the blessing of the rector for this. They really have a dire need and realize the importance of such prayers. Those behind the gate may turn out to be only annoying beggars, but they cannot be denied alms.

No one can look into a person’s heart except the Lord; what if your alms change someone’s soul? And the person will pray for your deceased dad (grandfather, brother) for the rest of his life, and not just up to 40 days. Don't pass by.

What to read on your own

Even in such, or better yet, especially in such a difficult situation, one should adhere to ordinary prayers. Also at home, special attention should be paid to texts from the Psalter. The apostles also advised them to accompany the souls of dead Christians into eternity. The Word of God is that living water that will give peace to the deceased and will have a beneficial effect on those who remain on earth.

It may be difficult to read the entire kathisma - you can agree with someone and read it at the same time (each in his own house) or in turn. The main thing is that the prayer sounds. The Lord accepts her as a sacrifice pleasing to Himself more than hard coin. He needs soul, diligence, not money. The same can be said about the deceased, who travels for 40 days both to the heavenly abodes and to hell. Imagine what it's like for him there. And prayer is like a fresh breeze that lifts you up.

Which psalm to read is not so important, the main thing is to put all your best wishes and feelings towards the deceased, to forgive him all the insults from the heart. After all, those who are still alive will not remain here forever. Through the prayers of the saints, may our father have mercy and save our departed parents, brothers and loved ones!

Previously, in Rus' on Easter everyone prayed, both the church and the entire believing people, for dead orphans for whom there was no one to pray. You also pray, saying in your prayer:

Lord, our support. Our protection and hope. We come to You every hour, every minute of ours. Although our roads are all different and we will approach You at different times, we will still be one and the same. I pray to You, Lord, You are my Heavenly King, Father-Protector, all-forgiving and loving. Forgive and have mercy on the souls of my deceased relatives (names). Forgive them as only You can forgive. And have mercy, as only You, our just and merciful Father, have mercy. Forgive them for the sins they committed, knowing they were sins. But believing in Your all-forgiving pure heart, just as children believe in the mercy of their parent, and the sins that they committed, not knowing the sin. Forgive them and have mercy, Lord, my God, merciful Lover of mankind, I ask You, Your many-sinful and unworthy servant Natalya for all centuries, for all those who died without repentance, not having the opportunity to ask for forgiveness in their last hour, with their last breath due to misfortune or illness, being treacherously killed or unconscious. Forgive all those baptized and unbaptized, those who believe and those who have not yet believed: as only You can forgive in the immense glory of Your wisdom and love for mankind. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Your prayer can be this or that, the main thing is to pray for the deceased, for those who are unknown to you.
Perhaps no one has prayed for them for a long time. Be it you.

About the deceased.

Remember, Lord, the souls of your departed servants, my parents (names) and all relatives in the flesh. And forgive all sins, voluntary and involuntary, grant them the kingdom and communion of your eternal good things and your endless and blissful life of pleasure (bow).

Remember, Lord, the souls of the departed and all in the hope of resurrection to eternal life, our departed fathers and brothers and sisters, and Orthodox Christians lying here and everywhere, and with Thy Saints, where the light of Thy face is present, have mercy on us all, for He is good and a lover of mankind, Amen (bow).

Grant, Lord, forgiveness of sins to all our fathers, brothers and sisters who have previously departed in faith and hope, and create eternal memory for them.

Our sins are like debts that are passed down through family. If the guilty person did not have time to atone for his sin, then his descendants will answer for him. To atone for the sins of parents, grandfathers and great-grandfathers, it is necessary to fervently pray for the souls of the departed and generously do good deeds: give alms, help those in need, and often order prayer services for the departed in church. For the same purpose, prayer has been given, through which one can get rid of the faults of those who did not live according to the laws of God.

“In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” says the Holy Scripture. “Ask and you will be rewarded.”

Now I, a sinner, born of a sinner, bound by the bonds of sin from century to century, bow my knees before God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, before the Mother of Jesus Christ, the Holy Mother and the Ever-Virgin. I beg forgiveness for myself and my entire family, who came before me and who will come after me. Forgive, Lord, the sins of my family, for the sake of all that is holy, for the sake of all the saints devoted to You. For the sake of John the Baptist, John the Baptist, the forty holy great martyrs, for the sake of the milk with which You were fed, Lord, King of earth and heaven! For the sake of the Cross of Your Faith, for the sake of Your Church. Free, Lord, my family from punishment for our sins. For You said that You forgive Your debtors, just as we will forgive our debtors. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Now, forever and forever. Amen.

By praying for others, you yourself will be forgiven.

Among the deceased people there are those who did not know prayers or did not have the opportunity to confess before their death. For example, mentally ill people, people who died suddenly, and so on.

Someone should pray for these people, because how difficult it is now for restless souls. And therefore, do not forget what knowledgeable people said in ancient times: by praying for others, you yourself will be forgiven. Here you will learn about prayer for those who died in a state of insanity, that is, for mentally ill people. If you ask the Lord for those who are no longer here, then the Lord will hear you in the most difficult moment of your life.

Wonderful are Your works, O Lord, and there is no end or limit to the greatness of Your mind! Lord, in Your power to humble the proud, to destroy the greedy and stingy, to deprive the wise of reason. But You, Lord, reject destruction, save the perishing, help those who ask, admonish the guilty.

Lord our God! I intercede in my prayer with the remembrance of Your departed servants, who were unable to confess their hearts and souls before their death, through a crushing mental illness or for some other reason known to the essence of Your all-seeing eye. Incline Your ear to my prayer and soon hear and accept for permission and forgiveness all those who have fallen asleep without confession to You and Christian prayer. For I grieve and lament for these souls, the souls of the suffering and restless. Son of God, Jesus Christ, forgive and have mercy on everyone who could not ask for themselves before their death.

Lord, our Father and Heavenly King, rest their souls with the saints, now, forever and forever. Amen.

What prayer is read for unbaptized dead children.

This prayer is also suitable for stillborn children.

Remember, O Lord who loves mankind, the souls of Your departed servants, the babies who died in the womb of Orthodox mothers, accidentally from unknown actions or from a difficult birth, or from some carelessness. Baptize them, O Lord, in the sea of Your bounties and save them with Your ineffable grace.

A prayer for the unborn, read only by the mother.

Lord, have mercy on my children who died in my womb! For my faith and tears, for the sake of Thy mercy, Lord, do not deprive them of Thy Divine light!

Wife's prayer for her husband.

Usually they do not marry until one year after the death of their husband. If the spouses were married, then the wife should take the wedding ring. If she never marries again and remains a widow until her death, then both wedding rings, as well as her wedding things, are placed in her coffin. If a husband buries his wife, then her wedding ring remains with him, and after his death it is placed in his coffin: so that he can come to her in the Kingdom of Heaven and say: “I brought our rings with which the Lord God married us.”

Prayer:

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! You are the consolation of the weeping, the intercession of the orphans and widows. You said: call me on the day of your sorrow, and I will destroy you. In the days of my sorrow, I run to You and pray to You: do not turn Your face away from me and hear my prayer brought to You with tears.

You, Lord, Lord of all, have deigned to unite me with one of Your servants, so that we may be one body and one spirit; You gave me this servant as a companion and protector. It was Your good and wise will that you would take this servant of Yours away from me and leave me alone. I bow before Your will and I resort to You in the days of my sorrow: quench my sorrow about separation from Your servant, my friend. Even if you took him away from me, do not take your mercy away from me. Just as you once accepted two mites from widows, so accept this prayer of mine.

Remember, Lord, the soul of Your departed servant (name), forgive him all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, whether in word, or in deed, or in knowledge and ignorance, do not destroy him with his iniquities and do not consign him to eternal torment, but according to Your great mercy and according to the multitude of Thy compassions, weaken and forgive all his sins and commit them with Thy saints, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life.

I pray and ask You, Lord, grant that all the days of my life I will not stop praying for Your departed servant, and even before my departure, ask You, the Judge of the whole world, for the forgiveness of all His sins and His indwelling in the Heavenly abodes, which You have prepared for those who love Cha. For even if you sin, do not depart from You and undoubtedly the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit is Orthodox even until your last breath of confession: with the same faith, even in You, instead of deeds imputed to him: for there is no man who will live and not sin, you are one besides sin, and Your righteousness is righteousness forever. I believe, Lord, and confess that You will hear my prayer and do not turn Your face away from me. Seeing the widow crying green, have mercy, calm my sorrow. How did You open to Your servant Theophilus, who went to You, the doors of Your mercy and forgave him his sins through the prayers of Your Holy Church, heeding the prayers and alms of his wife: here and I pray to You, accept my prayer for Your servant and bring him into eternal life.

For You are our hope, You are God, to have mercy and to save, and to You we send glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A husband's prayer for his wife.

There are prayers that no one will read for a person. These include the prayers of a widower or widower. These prayers are read in solitude, looking at the unforgettable face of the spouse with whom they lived their life on earth.

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! In contrition and tenderness of my heart, I pray to You: rest, O Lord, the soul of Your departed servant (name), in Your Heavenly Kingdom. Lord Almighty! You blessed the marital union of husband and wife, when you said: it is not good for man to be alone; let us create for him a helper for him. You have sanctified this union in the image of the spiritual union of Christ with the Church.

I believe, Lord, and confess that You have blessed me to unite me in this holy union with one of Your handmaids. By your good and wise will you deigned to take away from me this servant of yours, whom you have given to me as a helper and companion of my life. I bow before Your will and pray to You with all my heart, accept my prayer for Your servant (name) and forgive her if you sin in word, deed, thought, knowledge and ignorance; If you love earthly things more than heavenly things; if you care more about the clothing and adornment of your body than about the enlightenment of the clothing of your soul; or if you are careless about your children, or if you beat someone up in word or deed; If there is a grudge in your heart against your neighbor or condemn someone or something he has done from such evil ones.

Forgive her all this, for she is good and philanthropic; for there is no man who will live and not sin. Do not enter into judgment with Thy servant, as Thy creation, do not condemn her to eternal torment for her sins, but have mercy and mercy according to Thy great mercy. I pray and ask You, Lord, to grant me strength throughout the days of my life, without ceasing to pray for Your departed servant, and even until the end of my life to ask her from You, the Judge of the whole world, to forgive her sins. Yes, as if You, God, placed on her head a crown from an honest stone, crowning her here on earth; Thus crown me with Thy eternal glory in Thy Heavenly Kingdom, with all the saints who rejoice there, and together with them may eternally sing Thy all-holy name with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer for deceased parents.

And finally, the most grateful prayer to those who gave life to you, and therefore to your children and grandchildren. Do not forget your parents, do not do bad deeds and deeds, for the sake of the holy memory of the one who is not there, but on whom sin will be laid for you. For your parents are responsible for you even after death. The Lord will ask them: why didn’t they teach their child to be wise? This prayer is read by children about their deceased parents:

Lord Jesus Christ our God! You are the keeper of the orphans, the refuge of the grieving and the comforter of the weeping.

With contrition and tenderness of heart I pray to Thee, merciful Judge; do not punish with eternal punishment the deceased Thy servant, my parent, who is unforgettable to me, but forgive him all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, knowledge and ignorance, committed by him, in his life here on earth, and according to Thy mercy and love for mankind, for the sake of prayers Most Pure Mother of God and all the saints, have mercy on him and deliver him from eternal torment. You, merciful fathers and children! Grant me, all the days of my life, until my last breath, not to cease to remember my deceased parent in my prayers, and to beg You, the righteous Judge, to place him in a bright place, in a cool place and in a place of peace, with all the saints, from here all illness, sorrow and sighing escaped. Merciful Lord, accept this day for Thy servant my warm prayer and reward him with Thy reward for the labors and cares of my upbringing in faith and Christian piety, as having taught me first of all to lead Thee, my Lord, in reverence to pray to Thee, in Thee alone to place my trust. in troubles, sorrows and illnesses, keep Your commandments; for Your concern for my spiritual success, for the warmth of the prayers I bring for me before You and for all the gifts that I have asked from You, reward him with Your mercy, Your heavenly blessings and joys in Your eternal Kingdom. You, for You are the God of mercies and generosity and love for mankind, You are the peace and joy of Your faithful servants, and to You we send glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Five ecumenical Saturdays are considered days of special remembrance of the dead:

1. Meat-free parental ecumenical Saturday occurs two weeks before Lent. On this day, the Holy Church prays for all Orthodox Christians who died an unnatural death (wars, floods, earthquakes).

2. Trinity Ecumenical Parental Saturday occurs before the day of the Holy Trinity (on the 49th day after Easter). On this day, all deceased pious Christians are remembered.

3. Parental - 2nd, 3rd, 4th Saturday of Lent. Instead of daily commemoration of the dead during the Divine Liturgy, which does not happen during Lent, the Holy Church recommends enhanced commemoration on these three Saturdays.

Clean parent days:

1. Tuesday of St. Thomas week. This day is called Radonitsa among the Russian people. This is the ninth day after Easter.

2. September 1, the day of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist (strict fasting is required).

3. Dimitrievskaya parental Saturday is celebrated a week before November 8 - the Day of the Great Martyr Dmitry of Thessalonica.

Amen.

Prayers to the Lord for the repose of the departed.

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the eternal life, the repose of Your servant (name), and as the Good and Lover of mankind, forgiving sins and consuming iniquities, weaken, forgive and forgive all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, deliver him from eternal torment

the fire of Gehenna, and grant him the communion and pleasure of Your eternal good things, prepared for those who love You. Even if you sin, do not depart from You, and undoubtedly in the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, You are glorified God in the Trinity, faith: both the Unity in the Trinity and the Trinity in the Unity is Orthodox even until your last breath of confession. Therefore, be merciful to him, and give him rest in faith, even in You, instead of deeds, and rest with Your saints, who are generous. There is no man who will live and not sin; but You are the only one besides all sin, and Your righteousness is righteousness forever; and You are the only God of mercies, and generosity, and love for mankind; and we send up glory to You, Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

God of spirits, and of all flesh, having trampled down death and abolished the devil, and given life to Thy world, O Lord Himself, rest the soul of Thy departed servant (name) in a bright place, in a green place, in a place of peace, from where sickness, sorrow and sighing have escaped . Every sin committed by him, in deed or word or thought, as the Good Lover of Mankind, God forgives: for there is no man who lives and does not sin, for You are the only One besides sin, Your truth is righteousness forever, and Your word is truth. Thou art the resurrection, and the life, and the rest of Thy departed servant (name), Christ our God, and to Thee we send up glory, with Thy Beginningless Father, and Thy Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer for the repose of Orthodox soldiers killed in battle for their faith and Fatherland.

Invincible, incomprehensible and strong in battle, Lord our God! You, according to Your inscrutable destinies, send the Angel of Death to another under his roof, to another in the village, to another on the sea, and to another on the battlefield from the weapons of war, spewing out terrible and deadly forces, destroying the bodies, tearing apart the limbs and crushing the bones of the warriors; We believe that according to Your, Lord, wise vision, such death is accepted by the defenders of the Faith and the Fatherland. We pray to Thee, Most Blessed Lord, remember in Thy Kingdom the Orthodox soldiers killed in battle and receive them into Thy heavenly palace, as wounded martyrs, stained with their own blood, as if they suffered for Thy Holy Church and for the Fatherland, which Thou hast blessed, as Thy property. We pray to Thee, accept the warriors who have gone to You into the hosts of the hosts of the Heavenly forces, accept them by Thy mercy, as those who fell in battle for the independence of the Russian land from the yoke of the infidels, as those who defended the Orthodox faith from enemies, who defended the Fatherland in difficult times from foreign hordes; Remember, Lord, and all those who fought a good deed for the ancient preserved Apostolic Orthodoxy, for the Russian land that You have chosen, sanctified and holy in its language, and the enemies of the Cross and Orthodoxy offered both fire and sword. Receive in peace of soul Thy servants (names), who fought for our prosperity, for our peace and tranquility, and grant them eternal rest, as they saved cities and towns and defended the Fatherland with themselves, and have mercy on Thy Orthodox soldiers who fell in battle with mercy, forgive them all their sins , in this life done in word, deed, knowledge and ignorance. Look with Your mercy, O Most Merciful Lord, on their wounds, torment, groaning and suffering, and impute to them all this as a good deed and pleasing to You; Accept them by Thy mercy, having endured fierce sorrow and hardship here, in need, cramped conditions, in labor and vigils, there was hunger and thirst, you endured exhaustion and exhaustion, you were considered like sheep of the slaughter. We pray to Thee, Lord, that their wounds may be healing and oil poured out on their sinful sores. Look down from heaven, O God, and see the tears of the orphans who have lost their fathers, and accept the tender prayers of their sons and daughters for them; hear the prayerful sighs of fathers and mothers who have lost their children; hear, O most gracious Lord, the inconsolable widows who have lost their spouses; brothers and sisters crying for their relatives - and remember the men who were killed in the strength of their strength and in the prime of their years, the elders, in the strength of spirit and courage; look at our heartfelt sorrows, see our lamentation and have mercy, O Most Good One, towards those who pray to You, Lord! Thou hast taken away our dear ones from us, but do not deprive us of Thy mercy: hear our prayer and accept Thy servants (names) who have mercifully gone to Thee. call them to Your palace, like valiant warriors who laid down their lives for faith and the Fatherland on the battlefields; accept them into the host of Your chosen ones, as those who served You with faith and righteousness, and rest them in Your Kingdom, like the martyrs who went to You wounded, ulcerated and betraying their spirit in terrible torment; brought into Your holy city all Your servants (names) who are ever remembered by us, like valiant warriors who fought courageously in the terrible battles of which we remember them; their garments there are in fine linen, bright and clean, as if here they whitened their vestments in their blood and were worthy of the crowns of martyrdom; make them collectively participants in the triumph and glory of the victors who fought under the banner of Your Cross with the world, flesh and the devil; place them in the host of the glorious Passion-Bearers, the good-victorious Martyrs, the Righteous and all Your Saints. Amen.

Prayer for those who died a sudden (sudden) death.

Inscrutable are Your destinies, Lord! Thy ways are unsearchable! Give breath to every creature and everything from those who bring into existence, You send the Angel of death to him on a day he does not know, and at an hour he does not expect; You snatch him from the hand of death, granting him life with his last breath; Be long-suffering to the new one and give him time for repentance; You cut it like a grain with the sword of death in one hour, in the twinkling of an eye; you strike him with thunder and lightning, you burn him with flame, and you betray him as food for wild beasts; Whom he commanded to be swallowed up by the waves and abysses of the sea and the abysses of the earth; stole them with a destructive ulcer, where death, like a reaper, reaps and separates father or mother from their children, brother from brother, husband from wife, tears the baby from the womb of the mother, casts lifeless the mighty of the earth, the rich and the poor. What the hell is this? Your look is wondrous and perplexing to us, O God! But Lord, Lord! You are the only One who knows everything, weigh, why this happens and why

Was it that Your servant (name) was suddenly consumed by the gap of death? If You are punishing him for his many, grave sins, we pray to Thee, O All-Merciful and All-Merciful Lord, not with Thy wrath to reprove him and punish him completely, but, according to Thy goodness and according to Thy unconditional mercy, show him Thy great mercy in the forgiveness and remission of sins. What if Your deceased servant in this life, thinking about the day of judgment, recognized his repentance and desired to bring You fruits worthy of repentance, but not achieving this, was called by You on a day that you did not know and did not expect at the hour, for that reason even more We pray to Thee, Most Gracious and Most Merciful Lord, to correct, arrange, complete the unfinished repentance that Thy eyes have seen, and the unfinished work of salvation; The imams have only one hope in Your endless mercy: You have Judgment and punishment, You have truth and inexhaustible mercy; You punish, but at the same time you are merciful; beeshi, and at the same time you are acceptable; We diligently pray to Thee, O Lord our God, do not punish the one suddenly called to You by Thy Last Judgment, but have mercy, have mercy on him and do not cast him away from Thy presence. Oh, it’s terrible to suddenly fall into Your hands, O Lord, and appear before Your impartial Judgment! It is terrible to come to You without gracious guidance, without repentance and communion of Your Holy Terrible and Life-giving Mysteries, Lord! If Your servant, whom we remember, has suddenly died, he has sinned so much, he is so guilty of condemnation at Your righteous court, we pray to You, have mercy on him, do not condemn him to eternal torment, to eternal death; Be patient with us, give us the length of our days, to pray to You all our days for Your departed servant, until You hear us and accept by Your mercy the one who suddenly went to You; and grant us, Master, to wash away his sins with our tears of contrition and our sighs before You, so that Your servant (name) may not be brought down by his sin to a place of torment, but may he dwell in a place of rest. You Yourself, Lord, having commanded to strike at the door of Your mercy, we pray to You, O Most Generous King, and we will not cease to beg Your mercy and cry with the repentant David: have mercy, have mercy on Your servant, O God, according to Your great mercy. If You are not satisfied with our words, this little prayer of ours, we beseech You, Lord, with faith in Your saving merits, with trust in the redemptive and miraculous power of Your sacrifice, offered by You for the sins of the whole world; We pray to Thee, O Sweetest Jesus! You are the Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, you were crucified for our salvation! We pray to You, as our Savior and Redeemer, save and have mercy and deliver eternal torment from the soul of Your suddenly deceased servant (name), who is constantly remembered by us, do not leave him to perish forever, but grant him the ability to reach Your quiet refuge and rest there, where all Your Saints rest. Together we pray to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ our God, by Thy mercy accept all Thy servants (names) who suddenly came to Thee, who were covered by water, who were embraced by the coward, who were killed by murderers, who were hit by fire, hail, snow, frost, hunger and the spirit of a stormy slaying. , thunder and lightning struck, struck with a destructive ulcer, or died by some other guilt, by Your will and permission, we pray to You, accept them under Your mercy and resurrect them into eternal, holy and blessed life. Amen.
Funeral prayer

Remember, O Lord our God, in faith and hope the life of Thy eternal departed servant (Thy fallen servant; the name of the rivers) and as Good and Lover of mankind, forgiving sins and consuming untruths, weaken, forsake and forgive all his (her) voluntary and involuntary sins ; elevating him to Your holy second coming, to the communion of Your eternal blessings, for the sake of the only faith in You, the true God and Lover of mankind. For Thou art the resurrection and life and rest of Thy servant (Thy servant; the name of the rivers), Christ our God, and to Thee we ascribe glory, with Thy Beginning Father, and with the Most Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, Amen.

Father, bless the servant of God Andrey. My late grandmother (born in 1921) and grandfather (born in 1919) did not attend church because... the churches were all destroyed (Tyumen region), but somehow they were able to baptize them. What prayers should be read for them so that the Lord forgives all their sins?

Hieromonk Job (Gumerov) answers:

According to Orthodox teaching, through the prayers of the Church, the dead can receive relief or liberation from afterlife punishments. “Anyone who wants to show their love for the dead and give them real help can best do this by praying for them and especially by commemorating them at the Liturgy, when the particles taken for the living and the dead are immersed in the Blood of the Lord with the words: “Wash away, Lord, the sins of those who were remembered here by Your honest Blood, by the prayers of Your saints.”
(Saint John (Maximovich). Life after death).

In accordance with this, the Church has established special services:

1) Prayerful commemoration of the dead during the Divine Liturgy (at the proskomedia, after the consecration of the Holy Gifts and at the funeral litany).

2) Funeral services and lithiums

3) Reading the Psalter.

The highest in power and significance is the commemoration after the proskomedia and after the consecration of the Holy Gifts. An outstanding expert on the liturgical regulations, Saint Athanasius (Sakharov), writes: “The commemoration of the living and the dead at the proskomedia and at the consecration of the Gifts, although unspoken, in its meaning, strength and effectiveness cannot be compared with any other prayerful commemorations: health prayers, funeral memorial services. or any other pious deeds in memory of the living and the dead. It cannot be compared with the public commemoration at the same liturgy at the great and special litany (which is allowed in some places) and at a special funeral litany.”
(0 commemoration of the dead according to the charter of the Orthodox Church).

At each proskomedia, one of the liturgical prosphoras (the fifth) is offered specifically for the dead. It is necessary to regularly submit notes to the Proskomedia. You can also order daily commemoration of the deceased for 40 days (Sorokoust), six months and a year.

The Church established special funeral Saturdays, which were called parental: before meat emptying (i.e. before fasting), before the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, before the Day of Remembrance of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica (Dimitrievskaya) and on Saturdays of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of Lent. Every Orthodox Christian should strive to fulfill his duty to his parents and other departed relatives and on these days submit notes for the Liturgy and memorial service. Panikhida (Greek pan - “all” and nyx - “night”) literally means an all-night service. This name is attached to prayer for the dead because in its composition it resembles a part of the all-night vigil, and also because in the early times of the Church, during persecutions, it was performed at night, like the all-night vigil. Anyone can order a memorial service for their deceased relatives. Most often it is ordered on special days for the deceased (name day, day of death).

Sometimes the question is asked: why are they asked not to submit long notes? This is only due to the fact that the capabilities of the serving priest are very limited. Hundreds and hundreds (on holidays more than a thousand) names must be remembered by the priest at the proskomedia, which lasts 30 - 40 minutes. During this time, he must remember all those whose names are included in the temple synodics (health and funeral). If you commemorate at the litanies, then the reading of the notes will continue for a third of the Liturgy, which will disrupt the decorum of the service. Those who wish to remember their relatives have the opportunity to read their own memorial while the priest is performing the proskomedia. Brother of the Monk Nikon (Belyaev) John, who was with the elder Rev. Barsanuphius, a novice, recalled that in the Predtechensky monastery of the Optina Hermitage there were huge memorial books where the names of donors and their relatives for many decades were entered. Strictly in accordance with the rules, only the serving hieromonk, hierodeacon and sexton were in the altar. The elders gave their blessing to read the funeral books to all the brethren, not at the altar, but in the church at the time when the proskomedia was being celebrated. He writes that he used to submit notes, and then began to read himself during the proskomedia. Likewise, anyone, being in the temple, can read notes that turned out to be unsubmitted behind many names. We must believe that the Merciful Lord, seeing our circumstances, will accept this prayer request for the living and the departed. You can also read your synodics during the time when the priest or deacon recites the litanies for health and repose.

Since ancient times, the tradition of commemorating the house has also been established. Those who remember their duty of love to their departed relatives can regularly read the Psalter. Some read it daily according to kathisma, others with a certain frequency. The commemoration of the living and the dead is part of the morning prayer rule.

The relatives of the deceased (especially children and grandchildren, i.e. direct descendants) have a great opportunity to help their departed ancestors - to show the fruits of spiritual life (to live in the prayerful experience of the Church, to participate in the Holy Sacraments, to live according to the commandments of Christ). Although those who departed did not themselves grow these fruits, but their children and grandchildren showed them, they (the deceased ancestors) are also involved in these fruits as roots or a trunk. How great such help is even for those relatives who lived outside the Church, we know from the letter of St. Ambrose of Optina to Count A.P. Tolstoy. A mullah was baptized in his home church. On this occasion, the great elder wrote: “The baptism of this mullah, the conversion of the Lezghian Assan to Christianity, the accession of the Abyssinian and several other similar examples led us to the idea that it is not for nothing that God respects different tribes and peoples with different misconceptions regarding the one Divine truth; because, although it does not happen often, people from almost all existing tribes at different times turn to true Christianity... This means that if out of the darkness of the wicked only one turned to the Lord, then this is enough for the Lord; and for the sake of this, the one converted, a whole generation observes [i.e. knee], from which he comes” (Collected letters. M., 1995, p. 7).

“The fate of those who have departed is not considered decided until the general Judgment. Until then, we cannot consider anyone completely condemned, and on this basis we pray, strengthened by the hope of God’s immeasurable mercy!”

(St. Theophan the Recluse. Collection of letters. Issue 6, letter 948).
